Electricity Usage Guidelines

Electricity in Kenya comes from Kenya Power, much of it powered by renewable sources, but it's a scarce and costly resource. We kindly ask you to use it responsibly by switching off all electronic devices when leaving the apartment or not using them.​

Our apartments operate on a prepaid token system, standard across Kenya. Purchase tokens via M-Pesa (Pay Bill 888880) or other channels from Kenya Power; you'll receive a 20-digit code to enter into the clearly marked meter on the ground floor, adding units based on the amount paid (around 31 KES per kWh in 2025).​

As a courtesy from your hosts, we'll preload your meter with 15 kWh per day of your stay before arrival—typically enough for TV, fans, fridge, lights, and even a few hours of air conditioning. Any consumption above this daily allowance must be paid directly by guests; monitor usage closely and top up ahead, especially during hot seasons when air conditioning increases demand. Power outages: Power outages in Kenya can happen quite regularly due to peak demand, power grid issues or grid maintenance. Therefore we recommend you keep your smartphone batteries charged so that you have at least some communication options when the power is down. Often times outages occur only for a few minutes but can also last several hours.

Step-by-Step: Buying and Loading Electricity Tokens
 Buying and Loading Tokens Via M-Pesa (most common):

• Go to M-Pesa > Lipa na M-Pesa > Pay Bill > Enter 888880 (Kenya Power business number)
• Use your meter number as account number
• Input amount (KSh 100–35,000)
• Enter PIN.​
• After payment: Receive SMS with 20-digit token (e.g., 1234-5678-9012-3456-7890).
• Enter it on the meter keypad and press Enter—units load instantly.
• Retrieve last 3 tokens via *977# if lost.

 Alternative ways:

• Dial *977# select Prepaid > Buy Token > meter number > amount > M-Pesa,
• Or Use banks (KCB, Equity apps), or Kenya Power app/website.​
• After payment: Receive SMS with 20-digit token (e.g., 1234-5678-9012-3456-7890).
